One of your best videos yet! We’re firm believers in the value of an EMS. So far, our EMS has identified one miswired pedestal. And it cut power to our coach when it identified a pattern of low voltage in two state parks. We never plug in without our EMS.

Electrical engineer here with motor-home. This is what you should consider. I have a built-in EMS and all the power adapters talked about here. IMO, so should you. And a multi-meter is essential. Just saying, good video. I have watched RVstreet videos and he has practical engineering skills, pay attention. Really good stuff.

Great advice on the weather. Unplugging is definitely huge.... and like you said pulling in slides will prevent water damage and toppers from getting ripped apart. I've seen storms come in and toppers turn into droopy water tanks lol. During a storm they get whipped around and then they start to take on water and sag....then when you try to pull the slide in it's impossible without removing the toppers. And with slide topper all mangled, water starts pouring in the slide....what a mess :)

Very good videos. thank you i started watching you a few weeks ago. Well done and easy to follow. i had to laugh because just before i turned this on I was updating my manuals. I have created 4 notebooks with plastic sleeves and in each sleeve I have inserted the instruction for every item on my coach either existing or if I added them. They are organized in alpha order and easy for me to find. Even the instruction sheets packaged with things like chaise chairs. It give me a record of the manufacturer in case I need a repair part. I also have FILEs on my computer with all the large PDF manuals that I have downloaded and files of every major system with Model and Serial Numbers. It is on my computer and I have access to them from my IPhone as they are on Google Drive too! I just added this week a Hughes Autoformer which is a Surge Guard (in addition to my PI PX50)and voltage monitor. It increases voltage if you get a drop from the pedestal. vvLooking forward to next weeks video.

Martin... a must have item that never gets mentioned is an AED, automatic external defibrillator. Rarely does the camp ground office or store have one and we are usually camping in a remote area. We carry an AED and have a sticker in the window alerting other campers that we do. Yes they are expensive but it could save a life... mine or a fellow RV'er. Thanks!

Great video to start the series! Our water pump was making some noise so thought it best to replace it before we take a long trip this summer. I was going to put the old one on the shelf but after watching this I've packed it up for the trip....you never know if the new one is defective right? Put an extra set of keys out there also. To save the expense of a new EMS ($$$) I bought one lightly used from a local Craigslist ad and saved a bunch, surge protector now on the shelf! Just one tip though....tell Joanie to shut off the breaker at the pedestal before plugging in the EMS (or coach) to avoid any arcing which could eventually damage the prongs on the plug. Once plugged in then turn on the breaker to test the pedestal power. Looking forward to parts 2 and 3, keep the great videos coming!

Hughes Autoformers has an EMS (both hardwired and portable versions) called the Power Watchdog. The nice thing about the Power Watchdog is the surge protection circuit is on a replaceable board. If a surge blows your EMS, you replace a ~$30 board instead of replacing the whole unit.

    • @RVstreet
      @RVstreet  3 года назад +1

      Hey Brirend,
I'd like to respond to your comment and I'm glad you brought this up so I can just further clarify my thoughts to others that follow our channel, not arguing with you or anything.
I do understand the field replacement feature seems attractive but based on what I know and my experience, the PI EMS is a much better product and here's why.
I’ve read too many problems in the past with the Hughes that I was convinced if I was going to spend that much money, I wanted a reliable device. PI has an excellent reputation along with lifetime warranty of the PI vs the 3 year of the Hughes.
Had a friends Hughes go bad after just a few months. When I opened it up I found that several wires had been melted and the circuit board was burned.
The blue tooth feature on the Hughes is a nice feature I guess, until you update your phone, then there's a big probability of them not upgrading the app to work on your new phone. Companies are doing this everywhere now and I personally hate this road their taking. I'm old fashion. I've installed a digital meter that shows me exactly what my input/out put is. I don't want that hooked up to my phone.
Another issue I see when comparing the specs:
“Hughes Plug-n-play - only 4 second delay power on after plugging in (MY PI is set up to 2 mins)"
Hughes does delay 90 seconds after brownout or spike, but on in 4 seconds if power completely drops and comes back on. That’s not enough time delay in a situation where CG power is bouncing all over the place. The 2 minute time delay of the PI unit protects the AC's and other components if power is bouncing and fluctuating a lot. The PI will wait till the power simmers down and is constant.
Again this is another reason why I like redundant protection. Portable at the pedestal (Protecting the cord and initially checking the pedestal) and one in the electrical bay before it goes into the coach. Best senario IMO is an EMS on both ends. For me I just consider it Pay-to-Play to stay safe.
Thanks again so much for bringing this up. 👍

Another memorable video great job 👍 Please remember in addition to unplugging and bringing in your slides bring up your leveling jacks and those of you that have stairs that contact the ground bring those up. I have installed an EMS in our camper trailer. Stumbled across some RUclips videos about them 4 years ago. Had never heard of them before. So I decided to purchase and install. Had campers before, didn’t even use a surge protector. After seeing some of the videos and some horror stories, and realizing that I have a lot of electronics/appliances with computers. Mine has been installed for approx. 4 years now. Glad I did, In the last two years it has detected issues from low voltage to reverse neutral. This year alone, it shut down power several times possible saving electronics or appliances, or even wiring in the camper. A friend had an experience where he plugged into what he thought was a 30 amp outlet. It wasn’t and it fried all electronics and the camper wiring. Insurance paid to fix, but still a big pain in the butt and down time.

Thanks Martin and Joanie. This was a great, informative video ...and yes ...every situation you explained is Not out of the ordinary at all. There are a lot of crappy electrics out there in the RV park world and those items you showed are all necessary sooner or later on the road. And you are so right about inventories of RV parts out in the Co V I D world ...sad to say. You mentioned in one of your videos to suggest topics we would like to see. I haven't gone through your entire Playlist yet, so forgive me if these are already there. 1. Tracking down a roof/window leak and how to fix it. 2. How to remove a tire on a class A. I bought a force multiplier to pull the lugnuts off cuz I've heard an impact wrench often won't do it. I carry the wrench always but haven't gotten into the habit of carrying the force multiplier because it's so heavy and I'm in a 26ft class A. I bought it to install some sumo springs but haven't done it yet.
I take my 35 inch jeep tires off all the time but I'm intimidated by the rv because of its size.
Is the force multiplier the best way to go or is there another trick to get the lugs off? Of course I was in a situation where I would have loved having it cuz my tire went flat. Thankfully it was just a loose valve extender and I used my keep vaiar to pump the rv tire back up. But it would be nice to have the option to take it off and bring it in if needed...but it's so darn heavy! Any suggestions?

I do have a front cabin window leak fix video:
      ruclips.net/video/gksRZys6aX0/видео.html
Don't have one on changing a Class A tire. To much gear to carry, to big, to heavy. Just not practical for 95% of people like us who are retired and full time. Just have roadside assistance in the rare event that situation arises.
And nope having a force multiplier is the only way. Not for me.

TODAY, with all the RV's that are out there and the electrical load that's put on these parks, an EMS is absolutely necessary. That's is if you care about your RV. It's cheap insurance and can save you from a boat load of headaches.

What I did is cut the power cable in the bay, installed a male and female plug and then took my portable EMS and plugged it in inside the bay, this way it’s inside the bay , away from any rain and also from theft.
My idea doing this was the fact that if my EMS fails it’s all plug and play and easy replaced with my spare one.
It’s been 2 month with no issues.
Also when you sell your coach just unplug it inside the bay and plug the main wire back into the male and female plugs .
    Food for thought folks

Great job Martin! I have my power protector hard wired after my auto switch, this will protect my coach from faulty shore power and faulty generator power. I have all the dog bones and have had to use them more then once. If you have both 50amp and 30amp at the pedestal I like to use the 30amp to standard 110 bone to run my outdoor stuff like fans, crock pot, lights, and yes the buffing machine so the power is not running thru the coach. This is also helpful if the 110 GFI is not working which I’ve run into more then once. I have 2 50amp extension cables depending on how far I have to get. The only thing i’m missing is the portable pedestal tester so I’m going to build one. Thanks and keep them coming.

We bought a very expensive portable 30A EMS/Surge-Protector for our first Class-C. Being a little afraid it might be stolen during one of our shakedown cruises I decided to use it to test the pedestal power then stow it.
We were plugged in to a shared pedestal, it was during a typical hot Florida summer day and we are inside enjoying our air when OFF it went and half a second later ON it went. I thought what the heck. The folks that pulled in next to us during the day apparently had electrical problems and were troubleshooting their rig by flipping pedestal breakers. Thanks!
Well our rig survived that, but, educated me to at least two things, always have an EMS in between your rig and shore power!!! An EMS can and should be configured to insert a timeout function. And secondly, we've been part time RV'ing for a while an we've never heard of anyone having their EMS stolen (plus, like you said you could use a bike lock).

    • @RVstreet
      @RVstreet  3 года назад

Exactly. Good comment Space. Yep on our hard wired EMS I configured it to have a 2 minute delay before allowing power back into the coach. That's why I don't care for the Hughes version because it's a much shorter period and not long enough. I'm glad you bought a EMS. Some folks figure this out after the damage is already done.

@@RVstreet God I have serious "tool envy", that digital tire chuck is a serious tool. Lord knows how I struggled getting my arms around the tires on our first class-c RV. But like you've emphasized; tires really are our number one priority. And I whole heartedly agree. Not comfortable getting on the road to anywhere without verifying tire pressures, etc.
Our new Class-C E450 has a TPMS built in. Just starting to get comfortable with it. It isn't as slick as the one you have but I have noticed after filling them how close the Ford reading is to the what my gauge read.
Well our next purchase will probably be the VIAIR compressor (100% duty cycle).
      Happy New Year!!!

    • @spacecadet4876
      @spacecadet4876 3 года назад

@@RVstreet I can't answer that question yet. I didn't even think of that. What I was trying to find out is could I buy a TPMS display like yours and will the OEM sensors even communicate with it. The purpose being not having to "fiddle" with the instrument menu system while driving just to check tire pressures.
I just started researching the Ford TPMS. Now I have more questions to look in to.
      1) can I augment Ford OEM TPMS with an external display
      2) can I add sensors for a TOAD
I know I've read where consumers have purchased an activation tool to reset sensors saving them time and money. So my feeling is the answer is out there. But getting the right answer might take me a little research.

      @@spacecadet4876 Concerning your questions:
      1) can I augment Ford OEM TPMS with an external display
      2) can I add sensors for a TOAD
I think the answers will turn out to be, No and No.
I'm betting that what you'll have to do is buy a separate TPMS for the toad and 4 sensors. OR...to make it easier, I've met several folks who didn't want to fiddle with two different systems. It's just clumsy. They just bought a complete TMPS with 10 sensors like I did and now they can monitor all 10 tires at one place. Just to nudge you a bit, remember all TPMS systems are not created equal or accurately measure. Joanie & I have two couples that full time too and we keep in touch often and they both have different TPMS than us and they both constantly have problems with them.
Let me know what you find out from Ford. I'd like to know.

We currently have the yellow surge protector that you showed, but I'm looking to buy a similar model that is also a surge suppressor. It's a portable ems that will also shut off power of voltage goes down or high. Definitely a better option than the regular protector which just checks polarity and major surges.

They put that kind of info in the PI manuals just to cover their rear ends for liability reasons.
You would of been fine with that length. 25' for 30amp, 30' for 50amp are standard lengths and is totally safe and you won't loose any noticeable drop in current etc, etc. People use these all the time safely and we've never had an issue either. 👍
